Downloaded video won't play or has no sound
The usual causes, from the format inside the MP4 to a post that never had sound, and what to do about each.
Short version: if a downloaded video shows a black screen or an error, the player usually doesn't support its video format. Open it in VLC (free, Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone), or download it again at 1080p or lower. If there is no sound, the original post may have had none.
"I can't find the file"
- Computer: look in Downloads, or press Ctrl+J (Chrome, Edge) to see the browser's download list. Details per system are in the PC guide.
- iPhone: Safari saves to Files → Downloads, not to Photos. Open the file and tap Share → Save Video. See the iPhone guide.
- Android: Chrome saves to the Downloads folder (Files app). See the Android guide.
- Nothing downloaded at all? Large files are prepared on the server first, so keep the tab open until the browser shows the download. If the link itself fails, see why a video link won't download.
Black screen, error, or "format not supported"
An MP4 file is a container. Inside it the video can be stored in different formats (codecs). YouTube offers the same video in three of them: H.264 (also called AVC), VP9 and AV1. H.264 plays almost everywhere. VP9 and AV1 make smaller files at the same quality, but some players, especially older ones, can't decode them.
NoBsDL picks H.264 whenever YouTube offers it for the quality you choose. The catch is that YouTube usually doesn't offer H.264 above 1080p. When we checked a 4K sample video on 25 October 2026, this is what YouTube listed:
| Quality | Video formats YouTube offered | What NoBsDL picks |
|---|---|---|
| 144p – 1080p | H.264, VP9, AV1 | H.264 (plays almost everywhere) |
| 1440p | VP9, AV1 (no H.264) | VP9 or AV1 |
| 2160p (4K) | VP9, AV1 (no H.264) | VP9 or AV1 |
Other videos can differ, but this pattern is common. So a 1440p or 4K file that won't open is usually a codec problem, not a broken download. You can:
- Play it in VLC. It is free and plays H.264, VP9 and AV1.
- Download it again at 1080p or lower if it has to play in a built-in player, on a TV, or in an editing app.
- On Windows, the Microsoft Store has free VP9 and AV1 video extensions that let the built-in apps play these files.
Colors look washed out? Some videos are uploaded in HDR. NoBsDL prefers the normal (SDR) version when YouTube offers one, but at some qualities only HDR exists. HDR can look pale on a screen or player without HDR support. Lower qualities are usually available in SDR.
The video plays but there is no sound
- The post had no sound. X "GIF" posts and some Reddit or Instagram clips are silent at the source. NoBsDL doesn't add audio, so the file is silent too. Check the original post with the sound on.
- The player can't decode the audio track. For YouTube, NoBsDL keeps YouTube's own audio track (AAC or Opus) inside the MP4 rather than converting it. A few players can't play Opus audio in an MP4. VLC can.
- Only need the audio? Use MP3 instead. MP3 is converted on the server and plays in every music app.
MP3 shows "Unknown artist" or no cover
NoBsDL's MP3 files contain the audio only. We don't write artist, album or cover-art tags into them, so music apps may list the track as "Unknown". The sound is not affected. Most music apps let you edit the title and artist yourself.
The download link stopped working
A prepared file stays available for about an hour. Until then the same link can be used again, and an interrupted download can resume. After that the file is deleted from the server. Paste the original video link again to prepare a new file.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my downloaded 1440p or 4K video play?
YouTube usually offers 1440p and 4K only in VP9 or AV1, and some players can't decode those formats. Play the file in VLC, or download it again at 1080p or lower, which NoBsDL saves as H.264 whenever YouTube offers it.
Why does my downloaded video have no sound?
Either the original post was silent (X GIF posts and some short clips have no audio track), or the player can't decode the audio track. VLC plays both AAC and Opus audio.
Where is the file after I download it?
In your browser's Downloads folder on a computer and on Android, and in Files → Downloads on iPhone.
Why does my MP3 say Unknown artist?
NoBsDL's MP3 files don't include artist, album or cover tags. You can add them in most music apps.
How long does the download link work?
About an hour. You can reuse it until then. After that, paste the video link again.
